There should be a good amount of snowmelt by the time you go but I'd check in with Ross Lake Resort about your reservation. When I was there a few weeks back, the lake level was way too low for boats - the docks were completely dry by about 40 feet. As far as conditions go, I'd be more concerned about the lake level. As I mentioned, the lake is pretty low elevation so you won't hit snow unless you're getting up pretty high on your hikes, like Desolation Peak or Devil's Dome.Check here for site availability, looks like boat in sites are pretty wide open for 6/23. You should have no issue getting a permit. Some great early season trips around there. I was at Ross Lake a couple weeks ago - I'd forgotten how low Ross and Diablo are in terms of elevation. That said, you really can’t go wrong anywhere. Hat Island and 10 Mile Island are also super awesome. They’re all awesome but May Creek is my favorite. I’ve been to every campsite on that lake. Again not sure about conditions but I wouldn’t bother with crampons. Ross Lake Resort will be the only place to fuel up (I’m sure they’ll hook you up when you rent the boats.)ĭesolation Peak. I’ve always filtered lake water - never had an issue. Edit: a little research shows Desolation Peak is almost snow-free and will very likely be all clear by third week of June. Desolation Peak might have some snow but check WTA on that one. I’d leave the crampons home and bring lake floaties instead. I’ve never been denied so hopefully you’ll be good. Get out fishing too.ĭon’t know about backcountry permits. Lastly, keep food away from your campsites, there should be storage bins for that and have a great time man. You can either go to the mountain lake or scramble to the Trappers Peak for the view of the Cascade and the two other mountain lakes tucked in there. Trappers peak but that is away from the lake area and stuff. No, idea but I dont think there is any, tbh. There was no portable drinking fountains at the boat-in sites. For example, I was looking to hike Trappers peak which is nearby that area a week or so ago and the report was still a lot of snow at the top and needing crampons and ice axe to traverse. Check out the WTA or the All trails site for the latest update. However, higher elevation, you might need to double check. Trail conditions around the lake should be fine. However, with people getting out in droves due to COVID, you never know. I did Diablo Lake couple of years back and I was able to snag one and that was around the end of June too. For up to date info, remember to ask the ranger at the station when you are getting your permits.
